Assistant Director- Energy and Climate Justice Programs

Job Summary

The Environmental Center, with in the Division of Student Affairs, encourages applications for the Assistant Director of Energy and Climate Justice Programs. The Assistant Director position supports department operations, programming, and staff. Plan and execute programs and projects related to energy justice, climate justice, energy efficiency, renewable energy, water conservation, green building, and other campus sustainability and social justice issues. Manage student and professional employees. Strategize and improve campus sustainability efforts and related multi-cultural programs and projects. Provide professional level support to the Environmental Center director, associate director, and partner departments. Help develop and deliver signature events and staff retreats and trainings. Create and manage strategic partnerships with other departments within the division, outside the division and with government and community partners. Provide and design trainings for these partners and others. Help other departmental and campus sustainability professional staff to incorporate diversity, equity and inclusivity into their work.

Deliver and Coordinate Leadership programs and mentorship

Finds opportunities for innovation and development projects, ie Carbon Sequestration

Supports campus carbon and energy management planning

What Your Key Responsibilities Will Be

Manage, supervise and train staff and student staff working on energy and climate justice issues. Create program structures that use student leadership to manage specific aspects of programs. Develop training tailored for each program’s needs, including training on climate and energy justice as well as education and outreach on these topics. Meet regularly with students and/or their supervisors to provide guidance and support and ensure their needs and the program needs are being met. Provide growth and leadership opportunities for student staff. The responsibilities of student staff are to develop, promote, and implement events promoting energy conservation; weatherization of student rental properties; climate and energy justice awareness and mitigation; recruitment of sustainability leaders and representatives in many subsections of the student population; and door-to-door campaigns to promote energy conservation.

Work with the Environmental Center executive team to support management of partnerships, funding decisions, communications, policy decisions, and programmatic direction. Support assessment of programs and campus sustainability efforts with particular attention on increasing the integration of social justice elements systemically embedded in all phases of EC strategies and operations. Assist with policy planning, policy development and policy implementation in regards to campus climate neutrality, and the Governor’s energy reduction goals in the near-term, through active participation and recommendations for wider sustainability efforts on campus. Provide reports and updates for campus sustainability initiatives. Provide energy and water related support to green building and purchasing initiatives.

Develop and foster partnerships on and off campus that can be the source of outreach programs aimed at reducing energy and water through student, faculty, and staff education on energy and water conservation. Manage the FLOWS program and staff, including program coordinator. Work with the Just Transition Collaborative to further campus and community efforts and create opportunities to engage in policy work around energy and climate justice. Work with, Facilities Management, Housing and Dining Services (HDS), faculty and other staff in support of their conservation programs. Develop and foster partnerships for advancing climate justice programs and engagement the City of Boulder and other off-campus entities. Identify collaborative programming, training and events.

Perform programming on climate, water and energy justice issues to educate and change behavior. Conduct analysis to determine barriers and benefits to desired behaviors (community-based social marketing) as needed. Develop strategies that address desired behavior change. Implement programs and identify need for new programs and ensure social equity is incorporated into programs and messaging. Develop overall message and identify target audiences. Create outreach and education materials, including posters, stickers, website, social marketing sites, etc. Promote all programs and events using conventional methods and continue to search out new ways to promote behavior change through different avenues, utilizing student innovation to find and develop new marketing techniques.

Manage and supervise the Eco-Social Justice Team. Provide guidance for student staff in developing outreach programs, service projects, and educational events related to environmental justice, such as the Food and Environmental Justice Week events, communications, newsletters, etc. Create and manage partnerships with other programs incorporating and connecting issues of diversity and social equity, including energy and water programs. Develop training modules and create opportunities for trainings on and off-campus and participation in national or local conferences. Design, manage and maintain eco-social climate justice leadership program to provide students with an intensive, continuous leadership training with campus partners.

Manage and administer budget for the following programs: Energy Green Teams, Energy Outreach Team, Green Labs, Greek Sustainability, Eco-Social Justice Team, and ECO-Visits, and FLOWS. Find and secure funding for programs that address off-campus outreach needs. Develop proposals and written reports for funding partners. Submit annual budgets and reports for student government review.

Respond to student needs through participation in class discussions, student interviews, and general inquiries on energy/climate/environmental justice and conservation on campus. Integrate coverage of other Environmental Center program, like transportation and recycling, where applicable.

Administer and assist with the implementation of: carbon offsets and water certificates containing social justice deliverables for student government owned buildings and campus partners, Energy and Climate Fund; Sustainable CU projects. Provide technical support to CUSG building managers and students working on funded Sustainable CU projects.

Manage Green Labs Program Manager. Guide program manager in identifying new projects and prioritizing these projects. Provide support and assistance in management of student staff, recruitment of EcoLeaders, cultivation of campus partnerships navigation of campus bureaucracy and politics. Manage budget and seek opportunities for find additional financial support when necessary. Act as liaison between Facilities Management who is co-funding the program.

What We Can Offer

Salary range is $68,000 – $72,000.

What We Require

Bachelors in Environmental Studies, Public Policy, or a related degree.

Four years of professional experience in energy programs and/or other sustainability programs.

Special requirements: Ability to work flexible hours. Work is sometimes required on evenings and weekends, though not regularly.

Experience with budget planning and management.

Experience with implementing energy education programs in an institutional setting.

Experience and training in applied equity and social justice frameworks.

Experience with large group facilitation and student mentoring.
