Green Acres School is seeking a full-time and a part-time teacher of language arts and social studies for 5th and 6th grade students.
The 5th and 6th grade language arts program helps students to grow as readers, writers, and thinkers by engaging them in the reading and discussion of novels (like Tuck Everlasting and The Giver), poetry, and short stories, and by having them communicate both creatively and analytically in writing, in speaking, and through projects. The social studies program helps them to understand their own world through the lens of other cultures and societies. The curriculum focuses both on geography and on early societies, potentially including Egypt, Greece, Rome, Mesopotamia, India, China, and/or Africa, and then progresses into a study of Colonial America and the Revolution. Applicants should demonstrate experience in hands-on, project-based learning as well as more traditional forms of instruction. Students currently engage in projects where they develop a website about an accomplished person of color, design a dystopian society, build city-states, write excerpts of a novel in verse, engage in a constitutional convention, and stage a wax museum of Greek gods. Middle school classes cultivate skills through collaboration, critical thinking, and creative problem-solving. Our teachers are able to use best practices in classroom management while also building strong relationships with individual students. The expectation for professional collaboration is high in order to coordinate efforts as a teaching team, to serve students best, and to build integrated cross-curricular projects. The full-time position would also include serving as an advisor to a small group of students and as a liaison to the families of those students. The part-time position could be combined with the Middle School Learning Support position into a full-time role.
