Job Description
Position: Games and Movement Teacher
General Description of Post:
Movement is an essential element of a Waldorf curriculum. Waldorf schools consider movement
activities an important aspect of the human experience. A movement program is a necessary part of
a full Waldorf program to develop healthy physical and inner growth of the students. The
movement and games teacher leads a games, movement, and sports program so that the students
develop balance, dexterity, coordination, strength, spatial body awareness, as well as collaborative,
team building, and athletic skills all within the framework of the Waldorf School of Baltimore’s
philosophy and curriculum.
Hourly teacher requirements
The Movement and Games teacher is employed for 33 hours per week as follows:
Up to 23 periods of teaching and coaching a week.
The remaining hours are for preparation, and administrative duties.
Authority: The Games and Movement Teacher has the authority to:
Carryout the responsibilities of the position as described below.
Inform the Director of Academics of any support needed to carry out the responsibilities
listed or any concerns and issues that may interfere with the responsibilities below
To work with volunteer and part-time after-school coaches
Responsibility: The Games and Movement Teacher has the responsibility to:
1. Provide a developmentally appropriate program for first through eighth grade students that
awakens and nurtures a joy of movement, games and sports.
2. Use the Waldorf pedagogy to guide each students’ physical capacity to develop strength,
coordination and stamina physical capacities through such activities as body geography
games, gymnastics, coordination and balance exercises.
3. Coordinate and coach the afterschool sports program
4. Maintain records of attendance, student observations, and assessments
5. Carry out the obligations outlined in the categories listed below
Curriculum
1. To develop, plan, and lead a full games/movement curriculum, and afterschool sports
program for grades 1-8
The goals for the program will be accomplished through such activities as:
a. Grades 1 and 2: circle, collaborative and line games
b. Grades 3 and 4: introducing games that are precursors to sports such as kickball and Greek
dodgeball; building physical stamina and strength through fitness activities such as running and
jumping,
c. Grades 5 – 8: introducing team sports, skills, and drills.

d. Grade 5 specifically: the teacher will also prepare the students for the regional Greek Pentathlon
games of discus and javelin throwing, broad jump, 50 and 200 yard run, relay race, and Greek
wrestling.
e. Middle school: students are introduced to and discuss proper nutrition, the importance of rest,
and personal hygiene.
Instructional Environment
1. Coordinate, as needed, with class and lead teachers.
2. Prepare and maintain classroom, class materials, and class records (conference comments,
progress reports, and attendance).
3. Maintain, inventory, and organize games/sports equipment and first aid supplies
4. Manage Cost-Center budget. Ensure equipment and resources are well maintained and
replenished as needed.
5. Work with the regional coaches to establish schedule of intermural soccer and basketball
games, and intermural track meets.
6. Prepare and send out Afterschool Sports schedule and permission slips to middle school
families
7. Successfully complete Medical Technician training and administer first aid when needed.
Home / School
1. Engage families in a professional, articulate, and forthright manner.
2. Maintain communication with parents about the program, after-sports, intermural games and
other events involving games and sports.
3. Complete well-written, accurate quarterly and interim reports for parents while meeting all
deadlines and expectations.
4. Attend all parent nights and other school/community events, as required.
Teachers/Staff/Administration
1. Attend appropriate regularly scheduled full faculty and departmental meetings and other
community events, such as admissions and outreach activities.
2. Maintain communication with the office about any changes in schedule on calendar.
3. Maintain accurate records of money spent on classroom materials purchased.
4. Familiarize and/or deepening an understanding of the Waldorf program and anthroposophy.
Accountability (supported by and reports to): This position reports to and receives support
from the Academic Director.
Personal qualities, knowledge, and skills needed:
1. Undergraduate degree required
2. Spatial Dynamics training or willingness to learn about Waldorf movement methods
3. To develop and work from an understanding of Waldorf pedagogy
4. Experience coaching and directing team sports
5. Effective classroom management skills
6. Flexibility, stamina, creativity, self-awareness, and a sense of humor
7. Ability to work collaboratively with colleagues
8. Engage in ongoing training and professional development
9. The commitment and dedication to take up the work to strengthen diversity, equity, and
