The Department of Classics at Santa Clara University, a Jesuit, Catholic university, invites applications for a full-time tenure-track position at the rank of assistant professor, beginning September 1, 2022. The department seeks a broadly trained teacher-scholar working in Greek political history, especially the political history of democratic states. Interests in comparative government, ancient ethnicity, political philosophy, and classical influences on later governments are particularly desirable. The successful candidate will contribute to an interdepartmental academic program exploring democracy’s history and contemporary state from various disciplinary perspectives. The program is currently being developed through cooperative efforts from the Dean’s Office, Classics Department, and other participating departments. This search is part of a cluster hire in Race, Inequality, and Social Justice taking place in six departments in the College of Arts and Sciences.

The full-time teaching load is six courses per academic year spread over three quarters (seven courses with one course release for research-active faculty resulting in two courses per ten-week quarter). Courses will vary year to year. The ability to teach Greek history, Roman history, and undergraduate reading courses in Greek and Latin is essential. Candidates should also be able to teach a two-quarter Cultures and Ideas sequence in the University’s Core Curriculum ( https://www.scu.edu/provost/core/ ) and be eager to design new courses for other areas of the core or major. An outstanding record of teaching excellence and evidence of success in a program of scholarly research that results in peer-reviewed publications are required. Researchers who can involve undergraduates in their research programs are especially welcome. Finally, the successful candidate will engage in service to the department, college and university, appropriate to rank and will be expected to provide future leadership in the department.

Qualifications

A Ph.D. in hand is strongly preferred, but ABDs may be considered

Ability to teach reading courses in ancient Greek and Latin

Ability to teach a range of core courses

Ability to teach ancient democracy and comparative government

Evidence of potential research program likely to result in peer-reviewed publications in preferred areas

Ability to serve as department chair (after earning tenure)
