Our Mission

The J. Paul Getty Museum seeks to inspire curiosity about, and enjoyment and understanding of, the visual arts by collecting, conserving, exhibiting, and interpreting works of art of outstanding quality and historical importance and is one of four programs of the J. Paul Getty Trust. The Museum operates two facilities, the Getty Villa in Malibu, which exhibits its collection of Greek and Roman antiquities, and the Getty Center in Brentwood, which displays its collections of European art: Medieval and Renaissance illuminated manuscripts, paintings, sculpture, decorative arts, drawings to 1900, and photography to the present day (including non-European works). The Museum mounts approximately 25 temporary exhibitions a year across its two sites; maintains an annual permanent gallery improvement program and offers wide-ranging and ambitious programming for its visitors.

The Opportunity

The Education Department of the J. Paul Getty Museum seeks an Education Specialist for Gallery Education to strategically develop and maintain best practices for museum gallery teaching and innovative audience experiences. As a member of the Education and Public Programs Department, the Education Specialist for Gallery Education will have broad knowledge of museum education best practices, teaching and pedagogy, and commitment to diversity, equity, access, and inclusion principles for audience engagement. Under minimal direction, the Education Specialist for Gallery Education supervises associated program staff and reports to the Head of Education. This individual is also responsible for supporting the training, evaluation, and continued education of volunteer docents who provide school, site, and general public tours. A successful candidate will work to inspire curiosity about, and enjoyment and understanding of, museum engagement and the visual arts.

Major Job Responsibilities:
With minimal oversight from the Head of Education, this position is responsible for executing the Getty’s engagement strategy and suite of innovative virtual and in-person content to fulfill audience engagement goals at the Getty Center and Getty Villa.

Support and continue to build upon the Getty Education department’s nationally recognized pedagogical approach to gallery teaching.

Research trends and best practices in the museum education field for effective gallery teaching strategies.

Develop and iterate new in-person and virtual teaching models that dynamically engage a wide range of audiences in meaningful experiences with the Getty Center and Villa collections.

Supervise a team of Gallery Educators in researching and formulating gallery programs.

Model masterful teaching strategies and theories into practice with onsite and virtual audiences.

Working together with the Docent Program Manager and Villa Education Manager, support the research, development, and implementation of training, continuing education, and evaluation for school, site, and general public docents responsible for engaging with the general public at both museum locations.

Collaborate with the School Education Specialists to help shape effective experiences for K-12 school audiences at both sites.

Cultivate professional relationships and partnerships with local and national mission-aligned institutions to ensure the vitality and diversity of in-gallery programs.

Manage gallery education projects and programs; determine priorities and action items; prepare and manage project budgets; provide supporting documentation and updates as necessary; collaborate across departments as required.

Writes and/or reviews grants and grant reports for related program support.

Rapid communication and collaboration with internal stakeholders, including but not limited to Security, Visitor Services, Logistics, and Operations to ensure the success of the overall visitor experience.

Qualifications:
Bachelor’s degree; Master’s degree in museum education, art education, art history, or closely related field strongly preferred

5-8 years of project/process management and subject area experience

Foreign language skills

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
Knowledge of and experience in gallery-based teaching and art interpretation; demonstrated ability to masterfully teach with works of art

Demonstrated experience managing high performance teams

Ability to conduct independent research related to the Getty’s collection and holdings

Creative thinker, willingness to innovate and experiment with new models of engaging visitors in the galleries

Committed to diversity, equity, access, and inclusion (DEAI), social justice and culturally responsive teaching strategies

Strong interpersonal and leadership skills for building effective working relationships at all levels within the Museum, and the ability to foster a collaborative and inclusive team environment.

Desire to make Getty’s gallery education program responsive to the needs of a diverse range of audiences.

Strong presentation and teaching skills, great attention to detail, and strong diplomatic and mediation skills

Enthusiastic desire and ability to work in cross-departmental, locations, and cross-divisional teams

Foster a culture of research, reflection, and evaluation

Ability to tour groups in the museum galleries, model excellence and innovative teaching strategies

Ability to think creatively and use new technologies to expand outreach and program impact

Proven ability to succeed within a collaborative work environment

Proven ability to accurately prioritize and lead concurrent projects

Ability to juggle shifting logistics and priorities

Proven experience planning, forecasting, and managing a budget

Proven ability to work independently and take initiative

Sensitivity to operational guidelines

Foreign language skills a plus

Excellent computer skills including strong proficiency in standard business software

Excellent communication, written and editorial skills
