The Department of Classics offers B.A. degrees in Latin, Latin and Greek, and Classical Humanities, as well as M.A. degrees in Latin and Latin and Greek. It enjoys close ties with the Department of History, which awards the M.A. and Ph.D. degrees in Ancient History, and with the Department of English, the program in Comparative Literature, the Department of Philosophy, and the Department of Art History and Archaeology.
Founded in 1856, the University of Maryland, College Park is the state’s flagship institution. Our 1,250-acre College Park campus is just minutes away from Washington, D.C. and 32 miles from Baltimore, MD. The wider metropolitan area is home to many cultural and research institutions, including the Center for Hellenic Studies, Dumbarton Oaks, the Walters Art Gallery, the Library of Congress, and the Smithsonian Institution.

Position Summary/Purpose of Position:
We seek a broadly trained Classicist with a strong record and promising trajectory of research, whose interests are focused on Latin language, literature, and culture. Candidates should be prepared to contribute to diversity and inclusion in their research, teaching, and service.
Minimum Qualifications:
PhD in Classics or a related field. Teaching experience at the college or university level is also required, including courses in Latin language and literature, as well as classics in translation. Applicant must have published a journal article or book chapter or had one accepted for publication (one such article should be submitted as a writing sample).
Preferences:
Research and teaching interests should preferably include serious consideration of one or more of the following: race, ethnicity, and multiculturalism in antiquity; material culture in ancient Rome; digital humanities; the Black classical tradition. Demonstrated ability to collaborate with colleagues in related disciplines is also desirable.
