Duties and Responsibilities

The Department of Theology in the College of Arts and Sciences at Loyola University Chicago (LUC) invites applications for a full-time tenure-track position at the rank of Assistant Professor, for academic year 2022-23. The department serves the university’s undergraduate core curriculum and offers undergraduate majors and minors in Theology and Religious Studies. The department also offers an M.A. in Biblical Languages and Literature, Christian Ethics, and Theological Studies, and Ph.D. concentrations in New Testament/Early Christianity, Ethics, and Theology. Candidates should be willing to support the mission of LUC and the goals of a Jesuit Catholic Education. They should be prepared to teach a variety of graduate and undergraduate courses that serve the department’s diverse multi-cultural and multi-religious student body, as well as the Jesuit students in the First Studies program. This faculty member will teach undergraduate core courses (e.g., Introduction to Theology, Introduction to Religious Studies, New Testament), upper-level undergraduate courses in the writings of the New Testament and Early Christianity, as well as graduate-level seminars in their areas of expertise.

Qualifications

Candidates must demonstrate an ability to teach at all levels, undergraduate and graduate, and in the context of a theology department in the Catholic tradition, engaging with colleagues in theology and Christian ethics in a contemporary Jesuit Catholic university. As an urban-based Department of Theology dedicated to mentoring a diverse student body, many of whom come from under-represented and under-served populations, we especially encourage applications from candidates from under-represented groups. We also encourage applications from scholars committed to interdisciplinarity (i.e., working with colleagues across different subfields and disciplines) and the successful pursuit of external grants. The successful candidate will be joining a department with 28 full-time faculty members, approximately 50 undergraduate majors and minors, and 50 graduate students.

Candidates for the position must have completed the Ph.D. by the time of hire. They must clearly demonstrate actual or potential excellence in research and teaching, including the ability to mentor graduate students. All candidates should have strong language competence in Classical and koine Greek; knowledge of other languages pertinent to the study of the New Testament and early Christianity, such as Hebrew, Latin, Aramaic, and/or Coptic, is desirable. The successful candidate is expected to fill lacunae in the areas of specialization represented by the current faculty, come with a strong interest in Greco-Roman and Jewish religion and culture, and possess a research profile representing cutting-edge scholarship. Familiarity with the history of the reception of the Bible in the Roman Catholic tradition is expected.
