Full-Time, 12-month employee, benefits-eligible
Start Date, July 2022
Paideia was started in 1971 by a small group of parents who wanted a school that educated children with respect for their individuality. The school was founded on the idea that children have different interests and learning styles, and that they progress at different rates. The ancient Greek word Paideia conveys the concept of a child’s total education: intellectual, artistic, and social. After many years and considerable growth in size and programs, Paideia remains true to the ideas that inspired it and brought it into existence. Today, Paideia is the leading progressive school in the southeast.
Paideia is a pre-K-12 college preparatory school of over 1,000 students in the Emory University area of Atlanta; the junior high enrolls 184 students.Junior high classes combine 7th and 8th grade students into home base classes where they are taught language arts and social studies by the two home base classroom teachers. Students leave the home base for instruction in foreign language, math, music, art and science.
The program combines close contact and support from homeroom teachers with independence, individual responsibility, and a wide range of choices. It demands a lot from students, but does so in relaxed surroundings in which kids can feel at home. It provides a firm foundation in basic skills like math and writing, but it also has a creative curriculum designed to incorporate personal and social conflicts and develop self-awareness and expression. Additional information about the philosophy and structure of the program can be found in the junior high section of our school website at www.paidieaschool.org.
