General Summary of Position:
The Education Department at Bay Path University, East Longmeadow, Massachusetts is seeking a certified Fellow of the Academy of Orton-Gillingham Practitioners and Educators (AOGPE) to teach the Orton-Gillingham Approach through coursework and practicum in an online format with synchronous and asynchronous learning following the AOGPE guidelines. The courses are taught from Fall 2021-Spring 2022 in the Reading and Literacy Instruction Degree Program.
Course Descriptions:
RDG 528: Orton-Gillingham Coursework (4 credits) The Orton-Gillingham (O-G) approach is biologically and linguistically sound, diagnostic and prescriptive, structured, yet flexible. It is designed for the teacher who will work to individualize instruction to meet the intensive needs of struggling language learners. All aspects of the Academy of Orton-Gillingham Practitioners and Educators (AOGPE) Associate Level Curriculum will be covered through 45 hours of coursework and a practicum experience.
RDG 529: Orton-Gillingham Practicum (4 credits) The practicum seminars sessions run concurrently with the 100 hour practicum experience with 10 observations which cover all aspects of the Academy of Orton-Gillingham Practitioners and Educators (AOGPE) Associate Level Curriculum. Prerequisite: RDG 528
Responsibilities:
Instruct students on how to teach sequentially and systemically to reach struggling readers including students with dyslexia.
Teach students to design and teach an Orton-Gillingham lesson, administer a diagnostic assessment to inform Orton-Gillingham instruction, understand the reading brain and dyslexia, teach systematic phonics, including phonemic awareness training, teach syllable types and syllable division patterns, teach morphemes (including Latin and Greek) within an OG lesson
Instruct students in the use of a comprehensive scope and sequence for teaching the Orton-Gillingham Approach for students in K-12.
Observe 10 lessons via video submission and provide extensive written feedback
Read the practice annotated lessons submitted by students and provide written feedback
Manage online synchronous (ZOOM) and asynchronous learning using CANVA
Job Requirements:
Master’s degree required.
Previous teaching experience required, per listing below:
Orton-Gillingham Certification at the Fellow Level AOGPE
Experience teaching students of various ages and learning profiles
Evidence of continuing professional growth and development in the field of dyslexia
Experience teaching in an online format preferred and/or a willingness to learn CANVAS
Ability to adhere to University policies and procedures.
Ability to handle confidential information with discretion.
