Primary Function
The assistant dean serves as a senior member of the Dean of Students’ staff and leads the campus activities team in engaging undergraduate students in robust and meaningful programs and initiatives in order to build a holistic and sustainable healthy culture for all students. The assistant dean is responsible for the supervision of a comprehensive student involvement and activities program for Sewanee’s undergraduate students, which will allow them to develop, grow, and flourish as campus community members. This supervision includes inspiration, mentorship, and oversight for student activities, student organizations, student leadership development, Greek Life, and the Sewanee Outing Program. This position collaborates regularly with campus and community partners and serves on a variety of campus committees in order to champion healthy student involvement. The assistant dean also serves at the dean/director level of our on-call team, which includes responding to after-hours emergencies.
Typical Duties & Responsibilities
Departmental management and supervision:
Provides development and oversight of the Campus Activities values, vision, mission, goals, and strategic plan and ensures they all align with university priorities
Provides ongoing and consistent assessment and evaluation for the unit, including meeting with staff on a regular basis
Leads budget development and fiscal management for Campus Activities
Supervises two coordinators in Campus Activities
Supervises the Sewanee Outing Program Director
Supervises and provides support for the Director of Greek Life in advising Greek chapters, chapter advisors, and Greek alumni
Responsible for oversight for all Campus Activities communications
Dean of Students Responsibilities:
Serves at the dean/director level of the university’s on call program (approximately 2-3 weeks/semester)
Serves on the university’s Care Team (for students of concern)
Collaborates regularly with the Assistant Dean for Community Standards in holding student organizations accountable
Other duties as assigned, including supporting the associate dean as needed
University collaborations:
Collaborates with faculty and staff colleagues to create a holistic co-curricular experience that promotes student engagement, which includes evening and weekend events
Serves as a resource to student organization leaders and University administrators regarding program and event planning on campus
Provides specific guidance on issues related to University policies and procedures, contract negotiation and management, and risk assessment
Collaborates on a regular basis with other units within Student Success, Civic Engagement, Alumni Relations, the Sewanee Police Department, and more
Represents Student Life/Campus Activities and serves on various campus committees and work groups as appropriate
Judgment Required Performance of the essential duties of this position is dependent upon independent ingenuity and developmental efforts.
Budgetary Responsibility Directly prepares budget for program and has full responsibility for planning, forecasting, approval, and balancing budget.
Machines & Equipment Used
Education
Masters or Ph.D. in higher education, student affairs, or related field
Experience
7+ years of experience in student affairs/student development. Multiple years of supervision experience is preferred.

Strong leadership skills, including experience in strategic planning and goal-setting; supervision and clear communication; public speaking and presentation skills; ability to forecast and think through budget development; understanding of student development and best practices within student affairs; strong collaboration skills
