Responsibilities

General Statement

The Assistant Director for Alcohol and Other Drug Education Program is responsible for delivering a comprehensive program focused on alcohol and drug education and awareness to the undergraduates of the College and as a consultant to Eastman School of Music on issues related to student alcohol and drug use. As a key to student academic success, wellness and harm reduction, the Assistant Director will develop educational programming; provide intervention services and coordination with the College partners including the Residential Life and Housing Services, Wilson Commons Student Activities, Fraternity and Sorority Affairs, Athletics and Recreation and Orientation. The Assistant Director will also collaborate with University Health Services, University Counseling Center and Public Safety on initiatives. The Assistant Director provides opportunities for alcohol and drug use education with undergraduate college students (both on campus and off campus students) identified through the conduct process and CARE Network.

The Assistant Director for Alcohol and Other Drug Education reports to the Director for the Center for Student Conflict Management in the Dean of Students Office.

Specific Responsibilities

Education and Programming – 35%

Provides leadership and direction for an evidence informed program focused on education and awareness around alcohol and other drugs.

Develops strategic plans, goals and objectives for the program. Makes strategic recommendations for future programs.

Collaborates with Residential Life to provide alcohol and other drug programming in the residence halls, Greek houses and off campus. This includes professional staff training, student staff training (RAs, CAs, GHRs, GHAs, Neighborhood Ambassadors). Develops and delivers programs for student residence hall floors and groups focused on alcohol and drug awareness.

Oversee the Student Wanting Alcohol Responsibly Monitored(SWARM) program as well as the facilitators, outreach opportunities and trainings.

Student Support and Intervention – 45%

Works individually with students referred through the conduct process or CARE Network to assess alcohol and drug related issues, often using the BASICS program. Provides direct advice to students on issues related to alcohol and drug use, policy infractions and community standards, in order to assist them in making more appropriate choices and decisions.

Manages BASICS (alcohol and marijuana) software program, making any necessary updates or customizations throughout the year to meet identified needs. Recruits and trains new BASICS practitioners across the University to expand outreach to students.

Teaches the Alcohol Education Seminar for first level alcohol offenders. Periodically reviews content for effectiveness and relevancy.

Campus Community Responsibilities – 10%

Co-Chairs the Standing Committee on Alcohol Policy and Education (SCAPE). Works with students, staff and faculty to review alcohol and drug policy and education initiatives for the College and Eastman School. Advocates for environmental and policy change activities and strategies in collaboration with key stakeholders on and off campus. Create a biennial report (every 2 years) about alcohol programs and resources in conjunction with other campus partners.

Develops and administers a program for first year students that includes a pre-matriculation web-based alcohol and other drug education program and a follow-up orientation workshop for first year and transfer students.

Works closely with University Public Safety and the Rochester Police department to determine current drug trends on our campus and in the City of Rochester.

Other Duties 10%

Participates in regional and national professional organizations, monitors national trends, benchmarks with other colleges and universities, in particular peer institutions.

Selects, trains and supervises a graduate assistant who will assist in the delivery of the program to students.

Develops a program budget and manages the use of funds.

Participates in committee, research and special project work related to students and Student Services concerns.

Other duties – Perform any other job related duties as assigned.

Qualifications: The successful candidate will have a Bachelor’s Degree (Master’s preferred); 3-5 years of relevant experience in higher education administration or support services; and experience and training in a combination of student affairs, alcohol and drug support services, health education and/or social work. Must be able to work some evenings.
