Job Summary:
The Assistant Director for Fraternity & Sorority Life provides training, development, advice, and support for the individual members, chapters, councils, advisors and inter/national organizations of the Southern Methodist University (SMU) fraternity & sorority community. This position will provide specific advisement to the individual members and chapters of two of our four Greek councils – currently National Panhellenic Council (NPC) and Multicultural Greek Council (MGC). This position supports initiatives that benefit the entire community including event planning, training and development, and advice and support for SMU students and the fraternity and sorority community. The Assistant Director is a member of the Office of Fraternity and Sorority Life (FSL) within the Student Involvement team and works in service of the departmental mission, Student Engagement and Success unit, and divisional strategic plan.
Essential Functions:
Advising: Provide hands-on, personalized advising to the executive board, chapter leaders, and members of two of our Greek Councils. Communicate and meet regularly with alumni volunteers, (inter)national headquarters constituents, housing corporation boards, traveling consultants, and fraternity/house directors. Coordinate formal/informal council recruitment/intake processes.
Programming: Manage the planning and execution of FSL community-wide initiatives with specific responsibility for the Greek 101 informational course and event and the Family Weekend information session to further the development of a unified community and support values-based programming.
Serve as an active and engaged member of the Fraternity & Sorority Life team and support the department mission. Support the implementation and realization of the goals and learning domains in the Student Affairs strategic plan. Support and encourage adoption of Connect.SMU. Complete other duties as assigned.
Qualifications
Education and Experience:
Master’s degree required. Student Affairs, Higher Education, or related field is preferred.
Minimum of three years’ experience working full-time in higher education and advising fraternities or sororities is required.
A working knowledge of chapter, campus and national fraternity/sorority affairs is essential.
Active membership in an inter/national fraternity or sorority is required. Experience working with diverse populations is preferred.
Experience with Microsoft Office Suite is strongly preferred.
Experience with Campus Labs Engage, recruitment registration software, and/or EMS is preferred.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
Candidate must have excellent verbal and written communication skills.
Must have strong interpersonal skills. Must be able to work effectively with a wide range of constituencies in a diverse community.
Candidate must have well developed organizational skills that include effective planning and time management. Must have strong attention to detail.
Candidate must have strong problem solving skills with the ability to develop creative solutions.
Must be willing and able to regularly work after traditional business hours on weekdays and occasionally on weekends.
