Position Summary: The Assistant Director for Student Support provides services to increase student success, resiliency and retention. The position supports students in crisis and emergency situations and serves as a primary contact for parents and families. The Assistant Director for Student Support initiates and fosters collaborative efforts between academic and student affairs staff in order to assist students in their effort to be successful at Puget Sound. The Assistant Director for Student Support assists the Associate Dean of Students in providing leadership to the Department of Student Support.

Essential Job Functions and Responsibilities:
Student Support Advocacy (65%)

Provide leadership to the Student Alert Group and coordinate the dissemination of information as appropriate to other student affairs and campus staff

Coordinate approaches with Academic Advising, Registrar’s Office, Student Accessibility and Accommodations, Center for Writing, Learning, and Teaching, and Counseling, Health, and Wellness.

Meet with students involved with actions of the Student Alert Group and Academic Standards Committee and support eligibility for return to good standing as appropriate

Facilitate processes for medical withdrawal and bereavement leave

Oversee administrative processes for Self-Harm Reports (SHR) and Mandated Assessment for Risk of Suicide and Self-Harm (MARSSH)

Serve as the primary contact for parents and family members of students of concern

Work collaboratively with the Student Care Coordinator as it relates to supporting students with off-campus resources.

Provide training opportunities for faculty and staff as it relates to understanding, supporting and appropriately referring students of concern.

Student Support Well-Being Education and Training (25%)

Determine a variety of educational programs to meet the needs of students that struggle with emotional, mental, financial, substance misuse, consent, boundaries and general well-being to be delivered to the campus community each semester

Collaborate with the Substance Abuse Prevention Coordinator and the Health Educator (and the student staff in those positions) to determine programming needs.

Meet weekly with the Associate Dean of Students and the student staff BRAVe Coordinator to determine the course of programming for consent and sexual assault prevention and education.

Help to determine large campus-wide programming efforts for consent, sexual assault prevention and education, substance abuse prevention and wellness education (i.e., Orientation and Greek Life New Member Education)

Assist in coordinating the Wednesday @6 programming efforts for all of Student Support to create per department/program in a rotation cycle.

Serve as primary educator on the topic of consent

Other Functions (10%)

Support the Posse Scholars program by coordinating all logistics for the annual Posse Plus Retreat

Serve as a Harassment Reporting Officer and member of the Bias-Hate Education Response Team (BHERT)

Supervisory Responsibilities

Indirect supervisor for Student Support Office Manager

Co-supervise student staff as identified by Associate Dean for Student Support

Minimum Requirements & Qualifications:
Bachelor’s degree required. Master’s degree in Higher Education Administration or related field preferred.

3 years of student affairs experience. Related higher education experience is considered.

Strong knowledge of the student affairs profession

Suicide Prevention training, desired

Green Dot Bystander facilitator training, desired

Excellent organizational, problem solving, writing, and communication skills

Sound judgment

Ability to work with students experiencing academic and/or student life difficulties

Ability to work with faculty and other academic support services in fulfillment of the university’s mission

Ability to work with parents and other family members

Experience with student affairs assessment

Experience with crisis management

Ability to relate to diverse constituencies

Familiarity with a range of computer hardware and software

Commitment to liberal arts education
