Job Overview:
The Assistant Director of Campus Safety is responsible for providing outstanding leadership and support in the development and implementation of a comprehensive safety and prevention program to support the College’s mission, vision, and strategic goals. The Assistant Director will assume a leadership role in the Campus Safety Department. This position is a senior management position within Campus Safety. The Assistant Director of Campus Safety will be the second in charge of 32 person 24/7 Campus Safety Department. The position reports directly to the Director of Campus Safety, and will assume leadership in the Director’s absence. The position requires significant management and administrative support to the Director, while primarily assigned to evenings and weekends.
Job duties include but are not limited to the following:
Ensure that the Campus Safety Office contributes to a safe and secure learning environment through the development and enforcement of operational guidelines, policies, and procedures. Prepare and update operational manuals and documents as needed.
Assist with hiring, training, evaluating, and supervising all safety employees including the officers and student employees.
Serve as an involved member of the student life staff and collaborate with colleagues on programs, strategic planning efforts, community building, and leadership development.
Serve as one of the primary follow-up investigators of criminal activity and policy violations occurring on campus. Facilitate a positive working relationship with the Memphis Police Department and create professional reports based upon factual findings.
Understand, maintain and manage compliance with the Jeanne Clery Campus Security Act. Including, but not limited to: Coordinates along with the Director of Campus Safety the College’s Clery Act Compliance program, including the Clery Act Compliance policy; Serves as member of the College’s Clery Act Compliance Committee (CACC); Assists the Director of Campus Safety with preparing, publishing, and distributing the Annual Security and Fire Safety Report including ensuring compliant distribution announcements; Identifies (with the assistance of the CACC) and trains institutional “campus security authorities”; Ensures compliant crime report gathering from various internal and external sources, such as the Office of Student Conduct, local law enforcement agencies, and the state police including Clery Act compliant classification of crime reports; Ensures the institution maintains accurate Clery Act compliance proofs and records; Stays abreast of pending and final changes to the Clery Act and other laws or regulations affecting Clery Act provisions.
Oversee TBI data collection and reporting of crimes to the State of Tennessee by the day shift sergeant.
Manage and oversee the College’s parking program including logistics, appeals permits and enforcement strategies.
Primary producer/coordinator of all replacement electronic FOBs, “hard” room keys and mail keys.
Coordinate support requirements for special events and projects requiring special attention and additional security and represent the Campus Safety Department at meetings and public speaking events as required. Attend the Roundtable Event Planning meeting weekly.
Responsible for managing weekends in support of a 24/7 operation. Serve as a primary point of contact for students, faculty and staff after normal business hours, and serve as needed as an on-call administrator. Foster excellent working relationships with Residence Life, Athletics and Greek Life in order to work collaboratively in supporting the students.
Demonstrate the ability to teach and train students and staff. (crime prevention, bystander intervention or security officers training)
Regular attendance is an essential function to perform the duties of this position.
Job Requirements:
Bachelors degree is required; Master’s Degree in related field preferred.
Ability to obtain State of Tennessee unarmed Security Guard License.
Must have 5 years of supervisory and administrative experience.
Experience in college/university security setting is preferred.
Minimum of two years of investigations experience, Clery Act compliance experience.
Must have exceptional interpersonal skills and the ability to prioritize and manage multiple projects and demonstrate excellent written and oral communication skills to succeed.
Proficiency with Microsoft Office required.
