Assistant Director of Fraternity & Sorority Life

Northwestern University is looking for an experienced, innovative, culturally competent, student-centered administrator to serve as the Chapter Operations Specialist for Fraternity & Sorority Life. Alongside the full-time professionals working with Northwestern University’s fraternity and sorority community, this position will be the advisor to one or more councils and provide chapter support through a chapter coaching model. Beyond council and chapter advising, the Specialist will focus on providing support alongside the Director to stakeholder management strategies to include chapter advisors and campus partners in helping to support operations for chapters and councils. This position reports to the Director of Fraternity & Sorority Life. This position is a member of the Campus Life team composed of three departments: Fraternity & Sorority Life, Leadership Development & Community Engagement, and Student Organizations & Activities.

Please Note: Willingness to work flexible hours, including nights and weekends when needed.

Key Relationships: The staff in Fraternity and Sorority Life are expected to develop and maintain strong and effective working relationships with the staff from Campus Life, Community Standards, Counseling and Psychological Services (CAPS); Residential Services; Campus Inclusion and Community; Health Promotion & Wellness; fraternity and sorority alumni volunteers; fraternity and sorority headquarters/national boards; and other staff in the Division of Student Affairs. Fraternity & Sorority Life reports to the Executive Director of Campus Life.

Specific Responsibilities:
Provide guidance to chapters and councils at Northwestern University particularly in the areas of anti-racism, membership recruitment and education, leadership development and community engagement, risk management, social justice education, problem resolution, and community building.

Partner with stakeholders to create positive, strategic relationships with students and families, campus partners, international headquarters, alumni, vendors, professional associations, and the City of Evanston including assisting with chapter establishment or re-establishment processes.

Assist in the coordination of thematic programmatic/educational initiatives

Attend appropriate fraternity and sorority functions and campus events to maintain visibility/approachability.

Supervise graduate assistant/intern (when available) or participate in departmental/campus-wide committees as needed

Establish, disseminate, and interpret University policies and procedures as they pertain to the fraternity and sorority community at Northwestern University.

Participate in on-going strategic planning process and develop long-term goals and annual objectives related to Fraternity & Sorority Life and Campus Life

Regularly assess needs, satisfaction and learning outcomes of members of fraternities and sororities.

Performs other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications:
Master’s degree in college student personnel services, higher education or other relevant discipline required.

Minimum of two years’ full-time experience in fraternity and sorority life at a college/university required.

Experience in stakeholder relations/management related to fraternities and sororities

Strong advising skills and demonstrated experience in establishing and maintaining positive working relationships with fraternity and sorority governing councils, executive boards, and chapter leaders, as well as alumni volunteers.

Knowledge of issues and challenges facing undergraduate students in general and members of fraternities and sororities in particular.

Ability and willingness to function as a member of a team.

Excellent written and oral communication skills

Preferred Qualifications:
Two years of full-time experience in fraternity and sorority life at a college/university.

Understanding of the educational environment at highly selective institutions like Northwestern.

Demonstrated experience in program development, particularly leadership development and racial equity.

Demonstrated experience working with international/national fraternity and sorority offices to help resolve issues relating to Northwestern chapters.

Commitment to continued personal and professional development.

Prior experience advising a governing council (IFC, PHA, NPHC, MGC, etc.).

Prior experience advising/working with National Pan-Hellenic Council chapters/members and/or Multicultural Greek Councils chapters/members.
