Support Staff Temporary Roster

CBE Human Resources manages a roster of contingent casual on-call workers who are engaged to temporarily replace staff absences and to work on short-term projects. Work assignments may be scheduled in advance or the morning of the assignment. Roster staff enjoys the flexibility of working in schools and departments full-time or part-time with a minimum commitment of two days availability per week. If you are looking to work casually or if you would like to gain experience to move into a regular position, the Support Staff Temporary Roster maybe the opportunity you are looking for.

We are looking for reliable, self-motivated people to join our temporary roster team as on-call Langauge Interpreter to provide interpretation of oral communication for the Calgary Board of Education (CBE).

We are looking for committed people who have completed highschool and are proficient in English and target language as determined by the Interpreter Language & Skills Assessment Tool (ILSAT) or Cultural Interpreter Language and Interpreting Skills Assessment Tool (CILISAT) or equivalent. Completion of the CBE Language Interpreter Training or equivalent is required. One year of related experience working as language interpreter is an asset. An equivalent combination of directly related education and experience may be considered.

Position Description

Responsibilities

Renders all messages in their entirety accurately, as faithfully as possible, and to the best of one’s ability without addition, distortion, omission or embellishment of the meaning.

Treats as confidential all information learned, either uttered or written in the performance of one’s professional duties, while adhering to relevant requirements regarding disclosure.

Interprets verbal conversation from target language to English and English to target language, as required.

Employs professional conduct with schools, parents and students at all times.

Maintains an accurate record of time and follows the approval and submission process of the department for reimbursement.

Provides oral language interpretation services for CBE staff and service units, as required.

Performs other related responsibilities as assigned to meet department service delivery goals and objectives.

Qualifications

Education and Experience

High School Completion required.

Proficiency in English and target language as determined by the Interpreter Language & Skills Assessment Tool (ILSAT) or Cultural Interpreter Language and Interpreting Skills Assessment Tool (CILISAT) or equivalent.

Completion of the CBE Language Interpreter Training or equivalent.

One year of related experience working as language interpreter is an asset.

An equivalent combination of directly related education and experience may be considered

Demonstrated Skills and Competencies

Proficiency in both English and target language.

Ability to perform consecutive and simultaneous language interpretation.

High ethical standards related to confidentiality, accuracy, impartiality and professional conduct.

Can maintain impartiality by showing no preference or bias to any party involved in language interpretation encounter.

Can follow standards of practice related to role, boundaries, logistics, managing communication flow.

Continuous efforts to maintain and improve language competency and interpretation skills.

Ability to set out clear performance expectations and parameters for all parties involved in the language interpretation.

Familiarity with terminology associated with educational settings.

Ability to build rapport.

Competency with personal computer.

Time management and organizational skills.

NOTE: This position will be required to work flexible hours, including evenings and weekends. Language interpreters are required to secure transportation to and between their language interpretation assignments.
