Director of Orientation and FSL

General Description/Primary Purpose

The primary function of this position is to promote and build a thriving Fraternity and Sorority Life

(FSL) at Lenoir-Rhyne University, in addition to planning and executing First Year and Transfer Orientation.

The ideal candidate is self-motivated, demonstrates initiative, possesses superior interpersonal skills and willing to work flexible hours, including weekends and evenings.The following lists the responsibilities and expectations that this position entails.

This position is a 12-month full-time position with atypical work hours and blends two components of Student Life: Fraternity and Sorority Life and Orientation. As part of the position, you will plan, budget, schedule, market, and assess all programs. You will report to the Assistant Dean of Students.

Fraternity and Sorority Life

Develop and implement a comprehensive program that supports and enhances the Fraternity and Sorority community.

Provide leadership and direction to the advisors of each FSL organization.

Serve as a resource to Greek letter organizations by working closely with chapter advisors on University policy, procedures and programmatic initiatives.

Foster positive relationships and serve as a resource for the Student Life Office.

Create and maintain communication with chapter advisors and (inter)national headquarters staff through email updates, meetings, trainings and social media.

Coordinate campus wide initiatives which foster and encourage student participation and involvement in educational programming initiatives.

Responsible for guiding and directing risk management and crisis response.

Ensure all published content is current, regularly updated, and aligned with national best practices.

Implement an annual assessment plan and develop long-term programmatic goals.

Responsible for conducting relevant assessment initiatives that advance both the work of FLS and align with the vision and mission of the University.

First Year and Transfer Orientation

Develop, plan, implement and assess all new and transfer undergraduate student orientation programs working collaboratively with all campus partners while emphasizing academic success, student development and engagement.

Develop, plan, implement and assess all necessary Student Orientation Leader training.

Administer the annual budget(s) ensuring that expenses do not exceed revenues.

Oversee the development of publications to market and recruit prospective students into the New Student Orientation programs.

Manage the overall performance evaluation process of the Student Orientation Leaders.

Plan and implement parent/family programs and resources.

Oversee the development and maintenance of the New Student Orientation website and Canvas page.

Promote civic engagement.

In partnership with the Director of Student Activities, Coordinate Week of Welcome events.

Additional Duties and Tasks

On call responsibility for the campus on a rotating basis with other Residence Life Staff members. This includes providing 24-hour on call emergency services on a rotating weekly basis. During this time, duties include responding to emergency situations, assisting with life threatening medical issues and going to the hospital with students should an emergency occur.

Attend Departmental and Divisional meetings and in-services; participate in special committee assignments and other specific tasks as required.

Complete other duties as assigned by the Assistant Dean of Students as well as the Dean of Student Life.

Manage Student Resource Room.

Assist in the annual assessment process and editing the Student Life Assessment Report.

Support other programs and initiatives of the Office of Student Life as needed or requested.

Assist in the annual update and editing of the Student Handbook.

Regularly available and visible to students and staff; communicate interest in and availability to students through frequent contacts, maintenance of office hours, and attendance at hall functions.

Make referrals to appropriate campus offices.

Assist in the supervision of the Graduate Assistant(s) and student workers.

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

Master’s degree in Higher Education or a related field and 2 years relevant work experience in Student Affairs required

Strong supervisory, organizational, leadership and human relations skills desired.

Strategic thinker

Positive leadership style with an emphasis on empowering students to find their place in the campus community

The ability to listen to students’ desires, needs and concerns; identify interests and translate those expressions into positive programs and experiences

Exceptional communication skills and the ability to influence both students and higher level administrators

High energy with the capacity to develop programs

Ability to use technology to improve communication and advertising of programs and events

Ability to manage multiple budgets

Candidate must have a valid driver’s license
