DESCRIPTION: The Director of Student Involvement (DSIS) is responsible for the oversight of student government, activities, organizations, signature programs, communications, policies, technology platforms, and department staff which will cultivate a vibrant/active social life and help to nurture student leadership development for the 2,400 undergraduates in the College of Arts and Sciences at the University of Redlands. The Student Involvement and Success team supports students in the development and ongoing achievement of their co-curricular educational goals through best practices aligned with a curriculum and programming model responsive to student needs and reflects the divisional philosophy, Learning Applied.
A successful candidate will have experience working in a collaborative environment with on and off-campus partners, managing and advising students and professional staff, as well as the ability to plan, execute, and assess programs, policies, events, budgets, and activities. Superior leadership development planning, organization, supervision, interpersonal, and scheduling skills are essential. The Director of Student Involvement and Success (DSIS) is a full-time professional staff member reporting to the Senior Associate Dean of Student Affairs.
The responsibilities of the position include (but are not limited to):
The SIS Director supervises an Assistant Director, Program Coordinator, two Graduate Assistants, and four undergraduate interns. In addition to supervision of staff, the SIS Director is responsible for the coordination, planning, execution, and assessment of major student events, new student programming, and the oversight of Greek Council and the local Greek organizations with a rich history at the University of Redlands.
Serving as a member of the SIS team, all members will demonstrate accountability, initiative, ownership, pride, and maximize resources to provide robust programs, services, advising, and trainings. Office Hours are assigned to each member of the team during University business hours. All members of the team are expected to fulfill the mission of the office which necessitates several nights a week and working on weekends, and occasionally during academic breaks.
Primary Responsibilities:
Coordination, recruitment, training, supervision, development, and evaluation of professional and support staff.
Promotes a positive image of the University by coordinating and assisting in the development, implementation, coordination, and evaluation of major University-wide special events and division-initiated programs such as Homecoming, traditional programs, and award ceremonies.
New and Ongoing Student Orientation Oversight:
Develop and implement strategies to support successful onboarding and orientation of new students and their successful transition to the University.
Coordinate University-wide planning efforts related to ligations, communications, contracts, programs and events,
Serve as Primary Liaison to the Associated Student of the University of Redlands (ASUR):
Serve as the Advisor to the ASUR President, Vice President of Finance, and Vice president of Convocations and Lectures.
Leverage relationship building, responsiveness, and creative solutions to establish trust, credibility, and buy-in with student leaders and campus partners.
Develop systems and processes that promote sustainable student leader knowledge capture and transition.
Manage and advise ASUR on the development, implementation, and assessment of policies, budgets, practices, programs, and advancement.
Advises the campus-wide convocations committee in collaboration with the ASUR Vice President of Convocations and Lectures to provide a robust speaker series and Redlands TEDx program.
Manage department budgets including High Impact Partner program administration.
Manage and support Greek Council:
Oversee rush, recruitment, and new member education.
Advise Greek Council Executive Officers.
Recruit, support, and train University organization advisors.
Supervise Greek Interns.
Collaborate with Resident Life and Housing and Facilities Management on organization house maintenance and policies.
Serves as a liaison to the Greek Alumni Advisory Council.
Facilitate ongoing organization education and community development in collaboration with campus partners.
Assess and evaluate programs and services in accordance with the University engagement working group.
Assist senior management in formulating student service policies and procedures; make recommendations to improve overall administration.
Manage department related policies and practices related to contracts and risk management and ensure compliance with University policies and procedures and applicable legal rules and regulations.
Develop and supervise a comprehensive student leadership development program, by coordinating leadership initiatives using division learning outcomes.
Demonstrates a commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion by serving on campus committees, regular collaboration with the Campus Diversity and Inclusion office when developing student-related programs, policies, and events.
Performs all other duties as assigned including special projects that support the overall operation of the Division of Student Affairs.
Secondary Responsibilities:
Serves on committees as a representative of the student experience that will promote enhancing the student experience, including technology, diversity and inclusion, student onboarding, retention, community relations, development, campus policies, and wellbeing.
Manages communication about student practices, policies, and events to students related to Student Affairs Social Media, newsletters, and campus programs.
Performs other duties and projects as assigned or directed.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
Years of experience: 3-5 in related field and in leadership required; with 3-5 in a supervisory role preferred.
Academic credentials: Bachelors degree required; Master’s in Higher Education or related field preferred.
A valid driver’s license is required and a current DMV printout demonstrating a good driving record will be required prior to hire.
Strong organizational, analytical, decision-making, and administrative skills.
Knowledge of legal aspects of higher education.
Demonstrated administrative and supervisory skills.
Strong interpersonal, verbal, and written communication skills.
Personal attributes that facilitate effective interaction with faculty, staff, students, and the community
Must be self-directed and innovative, able to meet deadlines in a timely manner.
Must understand the correlation between student involvement and student retention.
Demonstrated experience collaborating with academic and student affairs staff in a timely and professional manner.
Knowledge of student advocacy best practices and methods.
Demonstrated experience with and commitment to the values of access, equity, inclusion, and diversity in higher education.
Strong computer skills including MS Word, Excel, student information databases, and Internet or web based applications.
Ability to maintain composure in a fast-paced, dynamic, and demanding environment.
The ideal candidate will possess experience working with diverse constituencies and sensitivity to multi-cultural issues and the ability to work productively in a collaborative environment to meet deadlines.
Must be able to competently interact with a culturally and ethnically diverse population of students, faculty, staff, and alumni.
