Job Summary

Augusta University seeks a creative, innovative leader to create a transformational college experience for undergraduate and graduate students. The position is responsible for the strategic leadership and day-to-day operations of the Department of Student Life and Engagement. This includes general oversight of all student activities including student programming, student organizations, Fraternity and Sorority Life, community engagement, and student leadership. Additionally, the Director provides leadership over the student activities centers. The Director will effectively supervise professional staff members responsible for the functional areas listed above. The Director should possess an understanding of and the ability to apply student development and learning outcomes theories. The Director will possess the ability to sustain communication with diverse groups, anticipate problems, reconcile conflicts, and maintain a strong philosophical base for student engagement.

Responsible for the strategic leadership and day-to-day operations of the Department of Student Life and Engagement. This includes general oversight of all student activities including student programming, student organizations including Greek Life, community service, and leadership initiatives. Additionally, the employee provides general oversight of the student activities centers, and for new undergraduate student and family orientation. The Director will effectively supervise at least 3 direct reports.

The Director should possess an understanding of and the ability to apply student development and learning outcomes theories. The Director will possess the ability to sustain communication with diverse groups, anticipate problems, reconcile conflicts, and maintain a strong philosophical base for student engagement.

Responsibilities

The responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
Provides Oversight and Leadership: Student Organizations, Student Programming, Student Leadership, Fraternity and Sorority Life, Community Engagement, and general oversight for the student centers

Provide direction for multi functional department that aligns with Unit goals and Division strategic plan

Recruit, hire, and train employees as needed

Develop job descriptions

Assign or reassign job duties as appropriate

Conduct Performance Reviews and submit salary recommendations

Review and approve all leave taken and hours work via electronic record-keeping system

Ensure everyone meets job responsibilities and conducts business in a professional manner

Establish division of duties and ensure all student engagement events have proper personnel coverage

Represent and advocate for the Office of Student Life and Engagement within the college administrative and governance structure and promote an environment that is responsive to student needs.

Develop effective relationships and collaborations between department and campus units and with external communities

Ensure all staff participate in professional development opportunities that will further the employees’ knowledge, skills, and abilities as it relates to student development, engagement, and student affairs professionals

Conduct regular staff meetings to ensure good collaboration and communication of information

Oversee the day-to-day operation of the department to ensure good customer service

Attend and assist in planning student engagement events to ensure proper coverage and to assess the effectiveness of programs

Develop, Coordinate, and Assess: Develop, coordinate, and assess a comprehensive student activities program focused on education, recreation, social connection, and cultural awareness which appeal to diverse audiences.

Facilitate the collection, analysis, and dissemination of data on the impact of student engagement at Augusta University

Lead collaboration, innovation and creativity in student engagement among student leaders, departments, and the community

Lead collaborative strategic and tactical planning efforts that result in student engagement initiatives that support all populations of Augusta University students

Enhance and maintain signature programs like Homecoming, Pig Out, the Paw Points Program, and Miss Augusta University Scholarship Competition

Develop and implement strategies for effective marketing of student engagement opportunities

Ensure appropriate risk management planning and mitigation for all programming from the office

Develop, implement, and review standard operating procedures for all aspects of student engagement to include but not limited to the Student Organization Handbook, Student Engagement Handbook, and Reservations process for the student centers

Assist with Student Conduct: investigations/hearings for student organizations

Ensure proper application of technology and automation to ensure excellent service to students and efficient internal processes.

Develop and Effectively Manage: Develop and effectively manage departmental budgets within available resources and provide oversight of day-to-day expenditures within the department.

Honor all university and University System of Georgia budget regulations for the type of funds allocated to the office

Ensure proper spending in each area of the department to include full expending of allocated budgets without overspending in the appropriate time frame

Ensure proper use of procurement cards within the department

Lead and coordinate the requests for student activity fee allocations for the department during the annual request period

Review departmental budgets at least monthly

Track income generated by the department to ensure appropriate budget amendments are implemented

Attend training and keep abreast of all fiscal policies developed by the University

Submit budget amendments as needed

Develop Strategic Unit & Retention Plans: Develop strategic unit and retention plans for the department and provide reports with relevant information related to these plans.

Develop annual goals

Determine how goals will be assessed

Review unit and retention challenges and provide reports/data which guide the department to make pertinent changes to improve services

Other Duties Assigned: All other related duties/tasks as assigned.

Required Qualifications

Masters Degree from an accredited college or university with five years experience in Higher Education or related field to include, but not limited to managing professional staff/students, budget and/or building/asset management experience.

Excellent interpersonal, written and verbal communication skills

Ability to work with a wide variety of people within both the University & community

Shift/Salary

Shift: Mon-Fri; Days

  • May be required to work outside normal business hours.

Pay Grade: 19

Salary: $51,967/Annually – $61,200/Annually

Salary to be commensurate with qualifications of selected candidate within the established range (generally minimum-midpoint) of the position
