Foreign Language Instructor

The Rhode Island College Upward Bound Program is a federally-funded program for college-bound rising 10th-12th grade high school students. This program is designed to instill in low-income, first-generation students the skills and motivation to increase their high school graduation, college-going, and college graduation rates.

The Upward Bound Summer Program is seeking part-time, temporary Foreign Language Instructors. Qualified candidates must be able to teach Introduction to specific high school level foreign language courses in 1 or more of the following: Arabic, Mandarin Chinese, German, Modern Greek, Japanese, or Korean.

The summer component focuses on developing a community with high expectations for academic achievement, behavior, personal development, and student accountability. Students take high school courses in literature and writing, mathematics, SAT prep, science, and foreign language. Field trips, recreational, social, and cultural activities may be offered as health and safety guidelines allow.

The Program is looking for individuals who are available to make the time commitment expected, support the philosophy and mission of Upward Bound, and the Code of Conduct (document to be provided if offered an interview).

Overview of Foreign Language Courses:
The course will acquaint the student to a more global perspective by introducing the culture as expressed through language and by discussing the history, geography, politics, and everyday social customs of its people.

Essential Duties

Develop an engaging and relevant course curriculum with student learning objectives aligned to reflect national standards, i.e. American Council on Teaching of Foreign Language.

  • Prepare a challenging course syllabus according to program guidelines.
  • Employ instructional approaches that reflect a respect for the diversity of learners and utilize innovative methods to engage students in mastering the objectives of the course.
  • Assess each student against course-related competencies and identify intervention strategies/support services to enhance level of mastery.
  • Submit weekly progress reports and final evaluation report on each student and other data by established deadlines.
  • Create a supportive learning environment that encourages appropriate behavior according to the standards set forth in the Upward Bound Code of Conduct, positive social interaction, active engagement in learning, and self-motivation.
  • Confer regularly with the Upward Bound counselors and meet with each at least once.
  • Discuss organizational and campus issues with Director in a timely manner.
  • Collaborate with other instructors to enhance teaching and student success

Occasional Duties Required Skills, Knowledge, and Abilities

  • Near-native fluency in foreign language of course as well as strong communication skills in English.
  • Commitment and experience to teaching culturally diverse students from low-income, first-generation backgrounds.
  • Excellent classroom management and personal organizational skills.
  • Teaching philosophy that all students can succeed given the appropriate environment and curriculum.
  • Ability to conduct engaging virtual classes with high school aged-students.

Required Qualifications

Education: Bachelor’s degree in relevant field.

Experience:

  • At least two years’ formal experience teaching groups of low-income, first generation high school students
  • At least two years’ experience developing an engaging and relevant course curriculum, and objectives which are aligned to current national standards.

Preferred Qualifications Environmental Conditions

The employee is not exposed to known adverse environmental conditions. Classes will be held virtually for summer 2021.
