Posting close date: August 10, 2021
Start date of this position: August 22, 2022
Required Degree: PhD
Required degree must be completed by the start date.
Duties/Expectations: The BYU Jerusalem Center and Department of Comparative Arts & Letters seek to hire into a Jerusalem Center Continuing Faculty status track (tenure track equivalent) a person with teaching and research specialties in Classical Studies/Greek & Roman History and academic coursework in ancient Near Eastern history. A person in this track will spend a full year every fourth year in residence with his or her family at the Jerusalem Center. When not teaching at the Jerusalem Center – typically three out of four years – the person will be a member of the faculty of the Classics Section of the Department of Comparative Arts & Letters. The appointment will begin August 23, 2022.
A PhD in Classical Studies, Ancient History, or related discipline is required. A candidate must also have completed coursework in Ancient Near Eastern history sufficient to enable teaching an undergraduate course in the area when in residence at the Jerusalem Center. A successful applicant will pursue a scholarly agenda of publication in peer-reviewed venues, as is expected of all Comparative Arts & Letters CFS candidates and faculty.
While there is flexibility in the timing, about every four years a candidate will be obligated to spend a full year (August to August, with family) at the BYU Jerusalem Center teaching fall, winter and spring/summer semesters. At the Jerusalem Center a candidate will teach two classes each semester: (1) a three-credit class on the Ancient and Classical Near East from the beginnings to the Crusader Period (ANE 336) using A Bible Reader’s History of the Ancient World (published by the Jerusalem Center, Kent P. Jackson, ed.). And (2) a one-credit class on the historical, scriptural and archaeological background of sites in the Holy Land that prepares students for weekly field trips (using, for example, information from Jodi Magness, The Archaeology of the Holy Land). As an extension of the latter course, the candidate will team teach at the field trip sites with Old Testament/New Testament instructors. The candidate will also provide pre-departure orientation lectures for out-of-country field trips to, depending on the semester, Jordan, Greece, Egypt and Turkey. Each of these classes and lectures will normally contain about 90 students, but if the Jerusalem Center returns to full capacity, the classes may have 170 students.
A candidate will be a member of the Department of Comparative Arts & Letters during the years not in Jerusalem and teaching assignments will be administered by the Classics section head and CAL chair, with a 3/2/(1)-course annual schedule with additional teaching in Spring or Summer terms. Courses offered will be Greek and Latin language and literature at all levels and include a range of GE courses (e.g. World Civilization, Golden Age of Greece, survey of Early Christian Literature, etc.), other core courses for the Classical Studies major, including courses supporting the Ancient Near Eastern Studies-Greek New Testament major, and periodically, courses in the candidate’s particular area of specialization.
A candidate must spend one year teaching at the BYU Jerusalem Center before applying for continuing faculty status and rank advancement, and this year of teaching will become part of the candidate’s portfolio for advancement. The evaluation of the year spent in Jerusalem will focus on teaching and on the fit and contributions of the candidate and family to the residential experiences for student, other faculty and faculty families, and Center staff. A strong, positive evaluation will be essential for CFS in the Jerusalem Center track.
Those with a strong academic research agenda and exceptional teaching ability are encouraged to apply. Salary commensurate with experience and rank. Candidates must be able to walk, hike and negotiate stairs and uneven ground.
Information required at the time of application – Please list the individual contact information for each of your three recommenders on the faculty application. At some point during the selection process they may be contacted to submit their letters of reference electronically.
Special Instructions:
Applicants must attach current curriculum vitae. In addition, send letter of application, two writing samples, transcript(s), and recent teaching evaluation; arrange for separate delivery of three letters of recommendation to Search Committee – Jerusalem Center/Classical Studies, Brigham Young University, 3008 JFSB, Provo, UT 84602. Emailed applications should be addressed to: Thomas Wayment at [email protected], Classics Section Head. Application deadline: August 10, 2021.
