We are seeking an inspiring and collaborative Primary Librarian (IB PYP) to join our dynamic IB Primary Years Programme (PYP) team. The ideal candidate will be passionate about fostering a love of reading, skilled in developing inquiry-based resources, and experienced in managing a school library in alignment with the IB ethos. You will play a central role in supporting transdisciplinary learning, information literacy, and research skills across the PYP curriculum.
Key Responsibilities
Engagement and Interaction – School Ambassador to Internal Community
- Champion the mission and philosophy of the school and the IB.
- Create an inclusive, welcoming, and inspiring library environment that supports student inquiry and well-being.
- Promote reading for pleasure, research, and personal growth among all students.
- Build strong relationships with students, staff, and parents to promote library engagement.
- Uphold a consistent language policy by modeling English usage in the learning environment.
Curriculum and Programme Development
- Collaborate with PYP teachers and coordinators to design and deliver inquiry-based, transdisciplinary Units of inquiry.
- Integrate library skills and information literacy into the PYP curriculum.
- Curate and manage a diverse, inclusive, and engaging collection of books and digital resources that reflect multiple perspectives and cultures.
- Support students in developing research, referencing, and media literacy skills in alignment with PYP expectations.
Teaching and Learning
- Plan and deliver weekly library sessions that foster inquiry, critical thinking, and a love of literature.
- Differentiate instruction to support the learning needs of all students.
- Develop and promote reading programs, author visits, book fairs, and themed events to cultivate reading culture.
- Model lifelong learning and promote the IB Learner Profile and ATL (Approaches to Learning) skills.
Resource and Library Management
- Maintain and develop the library collection, including cataloging, shelving, and weeding outdated materials.
- Manage the library budget, acquisitions, and subscriptions efficiently.
- Ensure accessibility of print and digital resources to support all areas of the curriculum.
- Use library management systems and educational technology tools to streamline library services.
Assessment and Reporting
- Use formative and summative assessment strategies to monitor student progress in library-related learning.
- Provide timely, constructive feedback to students and support classroom teachers in assessing ATL skills related to research.
- Contribute to school-wide assessments by providing insight into student information literacy and reading development.
Professional and Community Engagement
- Work closely with the PYP Coordinator and teaching teams to align practices with the IB philosophy.
- Organize workshops and literacy events for families to support a reading culture at home.
- Participate in professional development and stay current with trends in library science and IB education.
- Collaborate with other librarians and educators to share best practices and resources.
Additional Duties
- Supervise students in the library and other learning spaces.
- Participate in school committees, events, and celebrations as part of the wider school community.
- Support the development of a respectful, culturally responsive, and inclusive environment.
What We’re Looking For
Qualifications and Experience
- Bachelor’s degree in Library and Information Science, Education, or a related field.
- Professional teaching qualification preferred (PGCE, QTS, etc.).
- 3+ years of experience in a school library setting, preferably in an IB or inquiry-based school.
- Training or experience with the PYP is highly desirable.
Skills and Attributes
- Passionate about literacy, inquiry, and learner agency.
- Strong organizational and communication skills.
- Skilled in information technology and digital tools relevant to libraries and learning.
- Able to inspire and motivate young learners.
- A reflective practitioner committed to professional growth.
- Fluent in English (C1–C2).
Recruitment process:
- Panel interview including Primary Principal, Faculty Lead and Employee Success Manager (30-45 minutes).
- Final interview with the Head of School (30 minutes).
