Required qualifications

Ph.D. or foreign equivalent in Classics or a related field.

Ph.D.-level proficiency in classical Latin and Greek.

Successful performance as a Greek and Latin language instructor, with a minimum of one year teaching experience as sole/lead instructor (includes high school teaching)

Demonstration of commitment in undergraduate teaching, and substantial record of accomplishment in program development or administration and coordination.

Excellent verbal and written communication skills.

Consistent record of positive teaching evaluations from students, graduate instructors, peers, supervisors, faculty, and administrative staff.

Preferred Qualifications

Demonstrated interest in language teaching and pedagogy

Demonstrated interest in online instruction techniques

Ability to teach large introductory civilization classes

Experience with outreach programs (especially involving K12)

Experience with initiatives centered on diversity and inclusion in classics teaching

Coordination experience or experience mentoring new teachers

Three years experience or more as sole/lead instructor in Greek, Latin and Classical Civilization

Responsibilities

Teach undergraduate courses in Latin, Greek, and Classics; teach graduate courses in Latin and Greek prose composition, as needed.

Coordinate and supervise graduate and adjunct instructors in first- and second-year Latin and Greek courses.

Engage in curricular innovation, such as redesign of significant aspects of curriculum, introduction of new course sequences, or implementation of/refinement in use of new instructional technologies.

Seek and obtain appropriate funding from external or internal sources for the development of materials for the program as appropriate.

Advise the Committee on Graduate Admissions Advancement and Awards as to suitable candidates for appointment and reappointment to teaching assistantships.

Cooperate with the Director of Undergraduate Studies in placing students in first- and second-year Greek and Latin courses.

Offer professional development for graduate, adjunct, and CIS instructors in Classics and conduct professional development workshops.

Serve as member of appropriate departmental committees.

Engage in professional development activities.

Report to the faculty on matters involving the CLA Second Language Requirement.

Serve as coordinator for Latin and Greek College in the Schools.

Serve as liaison to the College of Education and Human Development on matters concerning certification for school teachers.

Engage in outreach activities and liaison work beyond the department, such as community outreach, conference organization, or on-site reviews of study abroad programs.

Classical and Near Eastern Studies (CNES)

CNES is an interdisciplinary department that brings together faculty and graduate students who might in other settings be dispersed among programs in Classics, Art History, Archaeology, Philosophy, Biblical Studies, Jewish Studies, South Asian Studies, Ancient Near Eastern Studies, and Linguistics. The department is devoted to rigorous philological and literary training and to the conviction that the ancient Mediterranean and Near Eastern world is best studied as a diverse but richly integrated cultural whole.
