Part Time Faculty, Performing Arts, Music

Northern Vermont University-Johnson invites applications for the position of Part-time Faculty, Performing Arts, beginning August 2021. We provide innovative professional and liberal arts educational experiences that prepare students to be critical thinkers and engaged global citizens.

The successful candidate will teach the following courses during the fall, 2021 semester. Candidates may apply to teach one or both of these courses.

MUS-3330 Worlds of Music (3 Credits)

This course introduces students to a variety of world music cultures, exploring their diverse musical sounds, structures, and traditions. The emphasis is placed on developing knowledge and understanding of the basic patterns in music, the concept of a music as a cultural phenomenon, and ethnographic approaches to music.

T/Th 2:30 PM – 3:45 PM

MUS-3031 History of Western Music I (3 Credits)

Prerequisite: MUS-1231, 1232 or the equivalent. A detailed survey of the art of music, covering the history of musical styles through the study of composers, their works and pertinent historical relationships. Periods include the origins of music, Greek music systems and thought, church liturgy, and Medieval, Renaissance, Baroque, Rococo, Pre-Classical and Classical music.

T/Th 1:00 PM – 2:15 PM

The ideal candidate will not only teach the courses listed above, but will also engage and mentor students. The successful candidate will work effectively with support staff, collaborate with various academic departments, and work with a broad range of student knowledge skills, abilities, and interests.

For consideration, candidates must possess at least a master’s degree in music or a combination of education and experience from which comparable knowledge and skills are acquired. Also required is experience teaching college-level courses. Preference will be for candidates familiar with teaching history of music and/or world music.

Compensation is commensurate with experience and degree within the VSC Part-Time Faculty Federation Agreement.
