General Purpose: The English Assistant Teacher reports to the department chair and provides general administrative support to teachers to include copying, filing, grading, using the student management system to record student information, providing direct support to students with needs, managing study hall periods, and covering teacher’s instructional duties as needed.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
Understand the basic scope of literature, to include one or more of these genres:
Classical literature including Ancient Hebrew, Greek, and Roman literature
American literature including the Colonial Period, the Revolutionary Period, American Romanticism and the American Renaissance, the Civil War and the post-war period, as well as fiction, poetry, and drama from the early 20th century to the present
British and World literature
European literature, world myths, and folktales
Explain proper Standard English usage and composition, and the history and structure of the English language
Illustrate the characteristics of the different genres of literature
Facilitate understanding of rhetoric and composition
Assist in the facilitation of the instructional programs as directed.
Assist with testing and assessment, multi-media activities, record-keeping, computer operation, discipline, and other activities as directed.
Prepare and set-up educational materials.
Provide feedback to teacher(s)/supervisor(s) on individual students.
Fill in as a substitute for classroom teachers when they are absent.
Communicate and coordinate with students and parents (oral and written) about routine issues.
Supervise and monitor students as assigned and reinforce positive student behaviors and student-related administration policies and rules.
May provide instructional support to students in designated curricula (e.g., English).
Discuss and coordinate instructional efforts with teachers and educational staff.
Maintain the confidentiality of student information.
Perform lunch and car-line duties.
Supervise study halls as assigned, ensuring all students are on task and productive.
Complete training programs and attends meetings as required.
Positively represent the school and its mission to students, parents, colleagues, and general public.
Able to work cooperatively with school staff and administration.
Other Duties and Responsibilities: As needed or assigned.
Minimum Requirements:
Four-year degree with at least 36 semester hours in content area or proof of a passing score on the Praxis II.
