Job Summary

Establishes critical texts using scholarly editing methods and procedures including systematic research of history of composition and publication, systematic collation of all versions (printings, states, and editions of a text). Collects and presents evidence for editorial decisions made to establish critical text, including rationale for adopted readings of text. Researches annotations to critical text. Has experience with book production (copy editing, proofreading, compiling indexes, contributing to design decisions, interacting with publishers). Works collaboratively with other editors and content scholars. Uses digital technology such as word processing applications, spreadsheets, desktop publishing applications. Interacts with library archives and special collections at various institutions. Assists in preparing materials for grant applications. Instructs student interns about scholarly editing.

Edits critical texts using methods and procedures of scholarly editing for publication of critical edition. Contributes to textual commentary for each critical edition which explains methodology, presents evidence and justification for each editorial decision; also writes annotations.

Independently evaluates texts which requires mastery of complex grammar, word usage, punctuation, and formatting, as well as the ability to detect and distinguish legitimate variations due to author’s style and mistakes due to printer’s errors, editorial intervention, and authorial lapses.

Works with other editors and colleagues to determine critical text (team collations, proofreading, consultation on editorial decisions regarding text).

Consults regularly with immediate colleagues about project scheduling, task distribution, editorial decisions, and direction of student interns.

Communicates with external editors and scholars to develop annotations, update bibliography, and in response to scholarly queries.

Collaborates with director on grant applications and reporting. Responsible for formation and completion of work plans for publications including scheduling and task distribution.

Leads and instructs student interns in tasks cultivating editorial skills including transcription, articulation of editorial methodology, proofreading, and team collations.

Often provides guidance and support to junior-level peers.

Qualifications

EDUCATION

Required

Bachelor’s degree in English, journalism, communications, public relations, or related field.

Preferred

Master’s degree in program involving philosophy, literature, or language, and textual analysis and editing. Educational background in philosophy, literature, languages, science, or religious traditions.

WORK EXPERIENCE

Required

Two years in a relevant field.

Combinations of related education and experience may be considered.

Preferred

Experience in textual analysis and editing and active participation in grant writing. Experience in scholarly editing. Facility with foreign language (French, German, Spanish, Italian, Latin, or Ancient Greek). Familiarity with work of American philosopher George Santayana. Familiarity with textual history of Santayana’s works. Ability to apply previous experience, knowledge, and skills to our existing and near future projects.

Working Conditions / Demands

This role requires the ability to effectively communicate and to operate a computer and other standard office productivity equipment. The position involves sedentary work as well as periods of time moving around an office environment and the campus. The person in this role must be able to perform the essential functions with or without an accommodation.
