Job Description

Assistant Dean of Student Life leads the Office of Student Organizations and Leadership, and under the supervision of the Dean of Students, serves in a pivotal role in helping to achieve the university’s strategic goals to enhance the student experience and success at Tennessee State University.

The Assistant Dean strives to promote student engagement beyond the classroom and will be critical to developing students, enhancing learning, building school spirit as well as increasing community and connectivity among students.

The Assistant Dean of Student Life is responsible for facilitating the planning, implementation and evaluation of campus-wide student organizations and working with students to develop, organize, and promote a wide-range of student activities and programs. Areas of responsibility include campus programming, student organizations, major student events, student leadership development, off campus student community involvement.

Principal Responsibilities:
1. Develop a shared vision and oversee programmatic areas of campus programming, leadership development, and student organizations.

2. Review, evaluate, and update student organization policies, procedures, and processes.

3. Work with faculty, academic staff, and deans to identify major-based clubs and organizations and support their development.

4. Develop and present education and developmental workshops for student leaders.

5. Provide oversight to campus-wide signature events such as Homecoming, Tigerfest, and Student Organizations Awards Ceremony.

6. Work to improve the quality of the student experience through student involvement and co-curricular learning as well as be an advocate for social justice.

7. Manage departmental budget and hire, train and supervise staff and student employees.

8. Negotiate, authorize and supervise contracts in the overall management and development of programs and activities.

9. Provide functional oversight to student center program spaces.

10. Submit weekly, monthly, annual reports as requested.

Minimum Qualifications/Experience

Minimum of seven to ten years for Bachelor’s degree or five years for Master’s Degree of progressively responsible experience in advising events/planning events and programs on a collegiate level.

Demonstrated experience with student leadership development /training programs.

Demonstrated experience in working with diverse populations of university students.

Successful prior experience in applying student development and learning outcome theories and in leadership training and development are preferred.

Familiarity with Greek-letter organization, particularly NPHC groups.

Experience with professional personnel and budget management.
