UMFA Security Staff

The Utah Museum of Fine Arts is located on the campus of the University of Utah, and offers visitors the opportunity to explore over 5,000 years of human creativity with a collection of over 20,000 objects and art works from classic Greek and Roman antiquities to cutting-edge, contemporary art. Founded in 1914, the UMFA is the State of Utah’s official museum, creating exhibitions and programs which serve a wide array of audiences. The Museum is located in the award-winning Marcia and John Price Museum Building.

The Security Staff is responsible for protecting the art and delivering excellent customer service while making sure all policies and procedures are followed by visitors, staff, volunteers, and colleagues.

Responsibilities

Secures buildings to avoid theft and property damage throughout the UMFA. Applies preventive measures to insure possible hazards are minimized.

Unlocks UMFA building(s) at the beginning of each work day and secures UMFA property by locking buildings and turning off lights and other electrical devices unintentionally left on after office hours.

Patrols the UMFA, inspecting building, examining doors and windows, and checking for intrusions.

Assists the Fire Department by answering fire alarms with fire fighters and unlocking buildings and barriers to permit entry.

Investigates disturbances and contacts police if a violation of the law has occurred.

Maintains appropriate logs to advise department heads of potential security problems.

Provides special services to the UMFA community such as locking and unlocking offices, escorting individuals and assisting patrons and visitors with directions. Assists in theft prevention by monitoring the security of controlled spaces and works of art via; building patrols and closed-circuit television.

Needs to be able to lift 50 lbs, ensure that parcels are received, inspected and delivered to appropriate staff with in the UMFA.

Assists UMFA staff during medical emergencies by calling University Police for Paramedic response, applies basic first-aid until paramedics arrive, and managing crowd control.

May occasionally be required to assist with moving works of art under the direction of the Collections Department.

Minimum Qualifications Preferences

One year security experience or equivalency; successfully pass a background check; demonstrated communications skills; and a commitment to providing excellent customer service required. A valid Utah Driver’s License preferred. CPR and AED certification preferred.
